Marching for equality

JOYFUL GRATITUDE #20

I’m grateful for the thousands of women, men, kids, dogs and their owners who carved some time out of their busy lives to come to the second Women’s March in Amsterdam last Saturday.

There were many wonderful slogans with puns and creative colourful banners, but the one above was my favorite. Simple, yes, but sometimes it’s good to go back to the basics, especially considering all the misconceptions around feminism.

There was a great atmosphere of solidarity at the march and it was heartwarming to see so many people who care enough to turn up and make sure their voice is heard for women and equality in general.

Taking another route

JOYFUL GRATITUDE #19

This morning was one of the first sunny spring mornings, so instead of trying to get to the office as fast as possible I decided to take my time (it was Friday after all!). I took a slightly different route as I cycled through the Vondelpark and just making that small change made me much more aware of my surroundings.  Normally I am lost in my thoughts, or just paying attention to the path, but this morning I really enjoyed the view. The soft sunlight shining through the trees was magnificent!

On being an introvert

img_4904

When I found out that I am an introvert (I think I was about 30), it was a real a-ha moment. I had so often wondered how other people managed to spend so much time in groups or hanging out with other people, when after a couple of hours of socialising the only thing I felt like was heading home to chill alone with a good book. I often felt like there was something wrong with me.

Basically being an introvert simply means that spending time with other people drains your energy, and spending time alone allows you to recharge your energy. It was such a relief to find out that I’m not flawed. Knowing that I am an introvert has helped me to just be myself, and also I’ve become much more conscious of protecting my downtime by myself so that I recharge and save my energy. The best comparison I read is that as an introvert you are like a computer battery, you have a certain amount of capacity to interact with others, but once it is empty you can’t be social again until you recharge.

It’s definitely a learning curve as I spent most of my life feeling like I constantly ‘should’ want to be more social. Nowadays I can recognise my physical need to relax in order to process a busy day at the office or a social weekend with friends.  I am practising saying NO a lot more to invitations (a part of me often wants to go but if I feel another part of me pulling back and thinking ‘this is too much, I actually just want to chill’, I do my best to listen to that voice). I try not to make too many social plans, especially when I’m using a lot of energy at work. But I do actively plan time alone to recharge (going for walks, naps, journalling, reading or daydreaming:)

A wonderful book I would recommend (for both introverts and those around them) is Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking by Susan Cain. She writes really well on the common misunderstandings about introverts, how the world should pay more attention to them and how to carve space for yourself in our world as an introvert.

Discovering Nijmegen

JOYFUL GRATITUDE #18

I’m very grateful for a lovely weekend with Paolo discovering Nijmegen for the first time. Despite the cold, we walked around the park overlooking the river Waal from Nijmegen’s hill and wandered down the little streets of the town.

We had to warm up regularly and which was a great excuse to stop in wonderful cafés and indulge in hearty sandwiches and rich cakes:)

Thanks to Paolo’s perseverance and good luck, we even got the last two tickets to watch a play version of Jack Kerouac’s On The Road that just happened to be playing that evening at the theater. The actors  were captivating and their way of telling the story was gripping!

Paterson

If you are looking for a great film to watch on a lazy sunday, I would recommend Paterson, the latest Jim Jarmusch film. It’s a lovely reminder about how beauty lies in routine and the small daily pleasures and struggles of life.  I don’t want to give too much of the movie away as I hate spoilers. Just watch it and be transported.

Pizza dinner

JOYFUL GRATITUDE #17

After a long day, full of meetings at work, I came home with a bad headache. Luckily we had planned to make pizza for dinner.  I don’t know if it was the fact that I was concentrated on chopping the veggies and cheese, as well as rolling out the dough for the pizza, or simply the pleasure of eating it, but my headache disappeared and I felt a hundred times better by the time we finished:)

Full disclosure:  the second pizza may or may not have landed on the kitchen floor right after this picture was taken… however I swiftly applied the well-tested 3-second rule and it was delicious all the same!

A big shout out to Simona B. who shared her pizza making skills with me a few months ago. The dough was perfect!

Lovely listening

img_0530

For me the cold winter months are the perfect time to stay indoors, in a state of semi-hibernation, living vicariously through podcasts about other people’s lives:)

Here are some of the thought-provoking podcasts I’ve been enjoying a lot lately. Check them out and let me know what you think.

Good Life Project Radio
Jonathan Fields alternates short 10 minute riffs on different life themes and 1 hour in-depth personal conversations with guests from all horizons. There is so much wisdom in these recordings.
Some of my favorites: The Truth About Luck, Orly Wahba, Elizabeth Gilbert, Tiffany Dufu

Strangers
Lea Thau is a beautiful story teller, many of these true stories have me crying and laughing at the same time.
Some of my favorites:  Alaska Bingo, The Waxing Virgin, the Love hurts episodes
Side hustle school
In a totally different genre,  Chris Guillebeau’s daily podcast is only about 7 minutes long and it presents lots of wonderful tips and tricks to get your business ideas up and running, without quitting your day job. I love that all the examples are really specific and concrete, with actionable suggestions.

Happy listening!

Precious daylight

JOYFUL GRATITUDE #16

Since a few days when I leave the office it’s still daylight!  I feel like the worst of winter is over now and it’s such a pleasure to no longer be cycling in the dark.  The soothing light of the magic hour over the Amsterdam canals on my way home is so beautiful.
